To celebrate the release of the record, The Carps held a free show last night at the UKULA store in Toronto. Despite the snow storm that hit the city in the afternoon and the freezing rain warning that was in effect, people still came out to celebrate the release of the new record.
The Carps, scheduled to hit the stage at 9:30 took their time to get started, and with good reason; with the streets covered in six inches of snow, it took people some time to get to the venue. By ten, the place was pretty packed and The Carps took the stage. Now, this was probably one of the worst shows that I have ever seen The Carps play. They weren’t getting their cues and were just all around sloppy. During their third song, Compton to Scarboro, drummer Jahmal Tonge broke one of his drum sticks and had to continue on with the set with half stick for the rest of the set. I don’t know what happened, but the band turned it around and got the place moving with the next song, Big Booty Girls. After that they were pretty solid, not at their best, but a heck of a lot better than the beginning of their set. To end the night they went to their closer, the crowd pleasing, flag waiving, booty shaking hit, All The Damn Kids. Before they started the song, friend of the band, Zach Frank of Cities In Dust, handed out flags, tambourines and noise makers to the crowd to get them ready for the song. They played the song and bassist Neil White did his signature dance and even did a pretty good cart-wheel, that was all before Tonge asked the crowd to start waiving their flags, and the place went nuts.
Overall it was a good show for The Carps fan, everyone had a good time, but if you were experiencing The Carps live for the first time at that show, well, I can understand if you were glad that you didn’t have to pay a cover. This band is usually a lot better live and I highly suggest checking them out.
