See You In Austin!
The SxSW Festival is happening at the end of this month in Austin, TX and Toronto is sending some of its best performers down there, like The Golden Dogs, The Old Soul, Apostle of Hustle and many more. Dave Bookman decided to hold a party for these bands who are going to represent this fair city in Austin with a stacked Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe.
Opening the night was Uncle Earl, a band from the States with members coming from all corners of the country. The five piece bluegrass ensemble was making their debut performance in Canada and it was great. Each member took the spotlight when it came to singing songs during the performance and every single member had an incredible voice. I swear, it was like hearing angles sing. Despite Uncle Earl’s fast paced songs, there wasn’t anyone dancing, let alone anyone in front of the stage, but the crowd was very appreciative and showed it by hooting and hollering after every song. Uncle Earl does plan on coming back to Toronto, and if you are a fan of bluegrass, this is a band that you have to catch.

Next up was Toronto’s Uncut. They will be headed to Austin to play three shows for SxSW and they will be supporting Clinic this coming weekend for their Toronto and Montreal shows. Uncut setup quickly and got right to work after finding out that they only had a strict half hour slot to fill up. Uncut delivered a great performance that night, mostly playing songs from their latest record, “Modern Currencies.” Everyone in the band had a chance to show their vocal ability, including bassist Derek Tokar, who has a few songs on the “Modern Currencies” record. The band had a less talk more rock attitude for this set and their set flew by. Nothing bad could be said about how these guys rocked, although they could have chosen some better songs for their set list; Kiss Me is the worst song on the new record, I would have liked to hear Understanding The New Violence from the “Those Who Were Hung Hang Here” album. Uncut are a must see band in this city and they will make Toronto proud representing the city at SxSW.

The Old Soul were next, but I caught them twice before and they failed both times to impress me; so I left. I wanted to see The Clicks from New York, who were closing the set, but sitting through The Old Soul wouldn’t have been worth it.
